Skills Development Updates: Qualification Deadlines, Governance Nominations, and Youth Month Opportunities – June 2026
The SA‑Skills team is pleased to share this latest update with our community of learners, providers, companies, and stakeholders. As South Africa’s skills ecosystem enters a decisive mid‑year phase, we highlight urgent qualification deadlines, governance nominations, Youth Month bursaries, and learner guidance that shape the sector in June 2026.
Transitional Arrangements for Legacy Qualifications – June 2026 Update
The Department of Higher Education and Training has confirmed that final enrolments into pre‑2009 legacy qualifications, including NATED programmes, will close on 30 June 2026. While this deadline signals the end of an era, targeted extensions of six to twenty‑four months have been granted for certain qualifications, depending on sector readiness and learner impact. All teach‑out pathways must conclude by June 2029.
Replacement occupational qualifications are already registered and rolling out, with workplace learning now a mandatory component. A Government Gazette listing extended qualifications should be published on 15 June, alongside SAQA’s website update. For learners, the message is clear: act quickly to secure enrolment before the deadline. Providers must ensure their qualifications are converted to occupational status, while employers prepare for compliance with workplace learning requirements.
SETA Accounting Authority Nominations – June 2026
Services SETA and Construction SETA have opened calls for stakeholder nominations to their Accounting Authorities, with terms running from August 2026 to March 2030. These governance structures are critical to stabilising SETAs, ensuring accountability, and directing funding effectively.
The nomination process offers stakeholders a chance to strengthen governance in the wake of administrative interventions and fraud scandals. Clear eligibility requirements and deadlines are outlined in the official notices, and participation ensures that sector voices are represented in shaping South Africa’s skills development agenda. Stronger oversight benefits employers and providers alike, stabilising funding flows and accreditation processes.
Youth Month Skills Opportunities – June 2026
June is Youth Month, and multiple SETAs, DHET, and the National Skills Fund have announced bursaries, internships, and learnerships aimed at expanding access for young people. Early updates suggest thousands of placements in engineering, construction, ICT, and agriculture.
These initiatives highlight the importance of workplace learning and apprenticeships under occupational qualifications. Learners are encouraged to explore bursary portals and internship calls, ensuring they align opportunities with their long‑term career goals. Employers can leverage youth placements to strengthen workplace learning pipelines, while providers should align offerings with occupational qualifications to remain relevant.
To further support this momentum, SA‑Skills encourages registered employers to share their own opportunities directly with learners. By posting vacancies or internships in the “Recruitment” option under User Posts in their Dashboard, employers can reach SA‑Skills registered learners who are actively seeking placements. This not only helps learners apply against verified opportunities but also strengthens visibility for employers within the skills ecosystem.
Skills Expos and Learner Opportunities – June 2026
June also brings multiple expos, fairs, and activations showcasing bursaries, internships, and training opportunities. Learners are encouraged to explore these platforms, but must verify that opportunities are legitimate, accredited, and relevant to their development.
Confirming opportunities through official SETA, SAQA, QCTO, or DHET sources is essential, as is checking that providers are accredited and qualifications are current. Matching opportunities to career goals rather than chasing stipends helps ensure long‑term benefit, while caution against unverified adverts or informal offers protects learners from wasted effort.
Moving Forward
As we close out the June 2026 topics, we want to wish everyone a Happy Youth Day on 16 June 2026. May the commemorations inspire continued growth, learning, and opportunity across the skills ecosystem. Learners are encouraged to explore the many opportunities available during Youth Month, while verifying that they are legitimate and aligned with their development goals. Providers, meanwhile, should ensure that their qualifications are converted to occupational status where required. Where extensions have been flagged, it is important to stay updated and prepare for the transition to occupational qualifications.
Together, these steps strengthen trust and visibility across the system. Wishing everyone a safe and restful weekend, and continued success in building skills for the future.
